Over one million fans expected to spectate along the route

ROLLE, Switzerland – It’s the kind of road trip that performance car enthusiasts dream of — a week-long, 3,000-mile (5,000km) driving adventure through 13 countries in one of the most hotly-anticipated new cars of 2013.

Nissan is teaming up with French publishing house L’Ecurie and INTERSECTION Magazine to participate in the 2013 Gumball 3000 Rally – a non-competitive, pan-European parade of the world’s most exciting and desirable cars – starting in Copenhagen on May 18, 2013.

The entry will be giving the millions of spectators expected to line the route a first glimpse of the exciting new Nissan 370Z NISMO in action. Gumball has a great heritage, providing a great platform to bring NISMO’s digital age performance to the streets of Europe.

The team has been entered as car 56, a number that has great significance for Nissan, which occupied ‘Garage 56′ at the Le Mans 24hr race in 2012 with the Nissan DeltaWing. The company will be returning to Garage 56, the spot reserved for innovative experimental cars in 2014 with an all-new race car incorporating electric technology.

Previewed in Barcelona in January 2013, the Nissan 370Z NISMO made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March and is set to hit showrooms later this year. Powered by a modified 350-hp six-cylinder engine, the Nissan 370Z NISMO features a bespoke chassis tuned to deliver a sharper and even more engaging driving experience. Capable of accelerating from 0-100kp/h in just 5.2 seconds, the new Z follows in the tracks of the first NISMO model to arrive in Europe, the Juke NISMO.

Set to be driven by Gumball 3000 regulars Patrice Meignan and Jeremy ‘Jey’ Taltaud, the Nissan 370Z NISMO features a special camouflage livery designed specifically for the event. Both are contributors to INTERSECTION Magazine and will be reporting on the rally via all major social media channels. In addition, fans can follow the action on NISMO.tv where a daily video post containing highlights of the previous day’s action will be available.

The Gumball 3000 has become a major draw for performance car enthusiasts from all over the world since the first event was held in 1999. Named after the 1976 cult film starring Michael Sarrazin, the Gumball 3000 Rally has attracted a host of celebrity entrants over the years, including musician Jay Kay, Former F1 champion Damon Hill and fashion designer Donna Karan.

Gareth Dunsmore, Nissan in Europe General Manager explains: “Gumball is a great fit for the 370Z NISMO: it’s a road rally which allows thousands of fans to get up close to their dream cars. Making exciting cars accessible is at the heart of the Nissan brand, and with our innovative NISMO.tv platform on YouTube our customers will be able to keep up to date with its progress, so we can’t wait to take part in this historic parade.”

Kicking off in Copenhagen on May 18 the rally will run until May 25, concluding in Monaco at the Formula 1 Grand Prix De Monaco 2013.

On May 25th, Nissan celebrated 10 years of manufacturing vehicles in Canton and invited the community – a major contributor to its success – to …

On May 25th, Nissan celebrated 10 years of manufacturing vehicles in Canton and invited the community – a major contributor to its success – to come out to the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson and enjoy a special musical performance by Grammy-winning R&B band Kool & the Gang. There was also circus performers and a children’s area with a variety of activities, and the day ended with an evening fireworks show.

“Our employees are the heart and soul of our operation in Canton,” said Camille Young, Nissan’s community relations and communications manager for Canton. “We are also deeply grateful to the broader community that has embraced and supported us during our first decade in Mississippi, and we want to take this opportunity to celebrate with those who contribute to our success—our employees, their family members, our local suppliers, area businesses and our community partners.”

Gates to the stadium will open at 4 p.m. Food and family entertainment will continue until 9 p.m., including Kool & The Gang’s performance at 7 p.m. and fireworks at 8:30 p.m.

There is no admission charge for this event or any of the activities. Nissan will provide complimentary tea, water and lemonade. Food will be available for purchase from local vendors inside the facility. Security will be provided for this family-friendly event. Coolers, alcohol and outside food or beverages are not allowed.

Nissan Canton brought the automotive industry to Mississippi in 2003 and has produced more than 2 million vehicles and made more than $2 billion in investments since launching operations. As the largest private sector employer in the region, the facility has an annual payroll of more than $200 million and employs a diverse workforce of more than 5,000 people from throughout the state. Nissan’s presence has also attracted numerous suppliers and manufacturers to the region, creating an opportunity for even more jobs.

At the anniversary kickoff event in January, Nissan announced plans to move assembly of the next-generation Nissan Murano to Canton beginning in 2014. Canton employees currently build the award-winning Altima, Armada full-size SUV, Xterra mid-size SUV, Titan and Frontier pickup trucks, NV commercial and passenger vans, and will begin building the all-new Sentra compact sedan this summer.

Since 2003, along with its generous employees, Nissan has awarded nearly $8 million in grants, academic scholarships and other gifts. Additionally, Nissan employees volunteer many hours annually for community organizations, including working with students in the classroom and as one-on-one mentors.

Additional information on 10th anniversary activities can also be found on the company’s local website: www.nissan-canton.com and on the Nissan Canton Fact Sheet.

The reinvented 2013 Nissan Pathfinder was named to the top spot on the list of 10 Best Family Cars of 2013 from Kelley Blue Book’s …

The reinvented 2013 Nissan Pathfinder was named to the top spot on the list of 10 Best Family Cars of 2013 from Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com today. The 2013 Nissan Altima also made this year’s cut of KBB.com’s top family-friendly vehicles. Each year, editors at Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com, the leading provider of new and used car information, develop their list of the 10 Best Family Cars based on characteristics that cater to unique family specifications and situations.

“The Pathfinder and Altima were both completely redesigned to enhance the driver and passenger experience with a bevy of technology and styling upgrades that satisfy the needs of the entire family,” said Jon Brancheau, vice president, Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. “The marketplace has embraced the new direction of these vehicles, and it’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by Kelley Blue Book for our achievements in making Pathfinder and Altima two of the most family-friendly vehicles on the road today.”

The 2013 Pathfinder represents a new synthesis of comfort and utility for this iconic, 27-year-old nameplate, with a more refined unibody construction providing a civilized ride yet maintaining best-in-class standard towing capacity of 5000 lbs. Kelley Blue Book’s editors also recognized the vehicle’s improved ride quality, better handling and best-in-class highway fuel economy of 26 mpg. Technology played a big role in Pathfinder’s award as well, with KBB.com praising features such as available Around View® Monitor with “bird’s eye” view, which the outlet claims is “among our favorite features in existence.”

The all-new fourth-generation Pathfinder seats up to seven passengers comfortably and boasts best-in-class interior volume, best-in-class front headroom and legroom and class-exclusive reclining third row seats*. The Nissan EZ FlexTM Seating System allows the second row to move forward or backward up to 5 1/2 inches for easy access to the back row, even with a child seat installed. When carrying seven passengers, the Pathfinder still accommodates up to 16 cubic feet of cargo.

The 2013 Nissan Altima, launched in June of 2012, was included among KBB.com’s 10 Best Family Cars due to its “sharp new look, tech-savvy features, refined driving characteristics and class-leading fuel economy” of 38 mpg. KBB.com gave special mention to Altima’s “comfortable seating for five and a host of safety features including blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist.”

The fifth-generation Altima is equipped with standard Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System and Streaming Audio via Bluetooth®. Other innovative technologies offered on Altima include NissanConnectSM and NissanConnectSM Navigation with a suite of Bluetooth® phone connectivity features including hands-free text message integration, Pandora® playback, real-time Google® POI search and more. Easy Fill Tire Alert adds further convenience for drivers and passengers who are protected by next-generation Safety Shield Technologies including Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Moving Object Detection (MOD) systems.

Basketball, the Indianapolis 500, and football are a few things that come to mind when thinking about Indianapolis. But there’s so much more to the city and its surrounding areas than that. People often overlook or forget about the natural beauty that can be found all over town. With the weather warming up, you’re probably itching to take leisurely drives with the windows rolled down and the music up. Whether you want an urban or rural environment, Indiana is a great place to take a scenic drive.

Lockerbie Square: If you’re looking for a more urban environment for your drive, you should definitely check out Lockerbie Square, Indianapolis’s oldest surviving neighborhood. Architecture aficionados and people who just like to ogle cool houses will enjoy taking a tour of this neighborhood. Here, you’ll find Italianate, Federal, Queen Anne, and Victorian style homes and mansions. The juxtaposition of old and new is always a surreal experience as you drive through this neighborhood. Another great thing about Lockerbie Square is the fact that it is in the heart of the downtown area, so after your drive it’s easy to find a great restaurant, bar, or theater.

Brown County: Brown County is located approximately an hour and a half south of Indianapolis and is known for its natural beauty. The soaring hills and immense forests are a must-see for anyone traveling through Central Indiana in the fall. While it’s certainly beautiful year-round, September and October are the highlights of the year. Make sure to check out Bean Blossom and Hesitation Point on your tour through the county. Ogle Lake lives up to its name: it boasts a view of magnificent leaves mixed with pleasant water. Try to make it there on a weekday if you plan on driving through Brown County State Park.

Eagle Creek: Located off of 56th Street, Eagle Creek Park is an extremely convenient park to go to if you just need to get away from the city, but can’t go too far. Eagle Creek has everything you may need to enjoy a relaxing drive close to downtown Indianapolis. Eagle Creek is an amazing natural habitat for many of Indiana’s indigenous species. You may see (or hear) anything from woodpeckers to coyotes. There is also a gorgeous reservoir for your viewing pleasure. If you like to picnic, Eagle Creek has lots of places for you to pull over and have a relaxing lunch.

Public Art Tour: In 2011, Indianapolis hosted the Super Bowl and in preparation, the city commissioned many works of public art. You will see many of these pieces as you drive through the city. So, take a drive around Indianapolis and try to spot each of the 46 works of art. You can find each mural with this handy map.

Crown Hill Cemetery: The Crown Hill Cemetery is located on the highest hill in Marion County. On most weekends from June through early October, the cemetery provides walking tours that can easily be modified into driving tours for a fee of $5.00. The themes of these tours vary from week to week and include the Indiana Heritage Tour; a tour of the famous graves of Indiana artists, actors, musicians, actors, and civil war generals to name a few. These tours typically last about an hour and are absolutely fascinating for anyone with the slightest interest in history.

“I think it could be of some good use to really get down to the nitty-gritty details of baby proofing a family car. No matter …

“I think it could be of some good use to really get down to the nitty-gritty details of baby proofing a family car. No matter what size car you have, your child should be comfortable and, above all, as safe as possible.”

Are you ready yet?

I’ve dedicated a lot of time this month to talking about preparing for a child to join your life and take a place in your car. I know I’ve discussed safety tips already, but I think it could be of some good use to really get down to the nitty-gritty details of baby proofing a family car. No matter what size car you have, your child should be comfortable and, above all, as safe as possible.

Doors

Nowadays, almost every vehicle has settings built into rear car doors that have child-lock features. Switching on the child lock means that the door can only be opened from the outside. This feature is designed to ensure that curious—and adventurous—children don’t find themselves opening the ‘escape door.’ You can find the child locks on the inside of the car door close to the door’s latch.

Sun Shields

You can find these in most baby aisles. Sun shields are made of material that suction-cups onto the backseat windows to block out the sun. Babies can get overheated more easily than older children and adults, and having the sun glare down on them is rather uncomfortable. Plus, they provide a little shade, which may help them sleep during the car ride.

Debris

It’s very important that your car remain as clean as possible. The more clutter, the higher probability that loose debris can fly around the car during an accident. This means you should get rid of everything you have laying around the back seat and the floor of the car. For items you need to have in the vehicle, use the pockets behind the driver and passenger seats. Keep your ice-scraper, wrench, and various other items in the trunk.

Air Filter

I’ve touched on this in a previous post, but I need to reiterate the importance of having fresh, clean air for your child and other passengers to breathe. So, you should definitely get your air filter checked. In fact, have the whole air conditioning unit checked out at your local auto repair shop. Chances are, your filter could probably be switched out for brand new one.

Clean

Give your car some regular attention and vacuum the seats and floors, shake out the floor mats, wipe down the dashboard, and remove any accumulated trash and clutter. This will decrease the number of dust and dirt particles that enter the air. After all, what good is a new air filter if the clean air is entering a dirty car? You, your child, and your other passengers will appreciate the fresh air and the clean car.

Keeping a clean and tidy car is the best way to ensure it is truly “baby proof.” Whether you’re veteran parents or new to the job—like myself—you need to know what it means to keep a safe and clean car for your children.

In addition, all models receive a suspension and steering tuning change, along with revised interior finishers. Versa Sedan SV and SL models also receive a new high-gloss black B-pillar treatment and improved seat comfort (bottom cushion and foam density). The optional SV Convenience Package and SL Tech Package also feature upgraded content, including NissanConnectSM with Navigation system with the SL Tech Package.

About the 2014 Nissan Versa Sedan
The second-generation Nissan Versa Sedan, now in its third year, continues to redefine entry-level car value. It combines a sophisticated exterior design, well-appointed interior and exceptional room for five adults – including more rear legroom than many mid-size sedans.

The 2014 Versa Sedan is again built on Nissan’s front-wheel drive global “V” platform, which utilizes nearly 20 percent fewer platform components and weighs around 150 pounds less than the previous generation “B” platform. The standard second-generation 1.6-liter HR16DE 4-cylinder engine includes a range of cutting-edge technologies, such as a dual fuel injector system that allows a wider injection of fuel, with the smaller nozzles delivering a finer spray (approximately 57 percent finer than the previous generation single injector design’s particle size) to help achieve more complete combustion. The engine also utilizes a twin Continuously Variable Timing Control (CVTC) system mounted on both intake and exhaust ports (conventionally mounted only on the intake port), similar to the system used on the flagship Nissan Maxima. The engine is rated at 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque.

The available next-generation Xtronic CVT® transmission utilizes an auxiliary gearbox using planetary gearing, helping enhance efficiency. It also features a transmission ratio of 7.3:1, which is broader than those of conventional CVTs and even typical 7-speed automatic transmissions. Fuel economy with the CVT transmission is rated at 31 mpg City, 40 mpg Highway and 35 mpg Combined; 27/36/30 mpg with the 5-speed manual transmission; and 26/35/30 mpg with the 4-speed automatic transmission.

The 2014 Versa Sedan is available in four models – S (5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic), S Plus CVT, SV CVT and SL CVT. Versa is also available in a 5-door 2012 Versa Hatchback version.

A $500,000 education grant announced today by Nissan will strengthen academic support programs for elementary students who are not making sufficient progress in their school …

A $500,000 education grant announced today by Nissan will strengthen academic support programs for elementary students who are not making sufficient progress in their school curriculum.

The $500,000 grant will be used by the Canton Public School District to employ two new academic interventionists who will provide targeted instruction and support to students needing the most intensive academic assistance.

Canton Public School Superintendent Dwight Luckett Sr. said, “We are elated with Nissan’s generous donation and continued support of educational opportunities for students in our community. For the district to reach its full potential, we are committed to working even harder to continue meeting the challenges before us. We can accomplish our mission much faster when community and business leaders like Nissan partner with us to offer hope, opportunity and inspiration to our students.”

Nissan also announced the donation of two vehicles to the Canton Career Center operated by the school district. The center prepares high school students for careers in automotive service technology, collision repair and other fields. The donated vehicles, a 2012 Nissan Xterra SUV and a 2013 Nissan Altima sedan, were manufactured at the company’s vehicle assembly plant in Canton.

Luckett added, “We are very grateful to Nissan for its commitment to enhancing programs offered at the Canton Career Center, where students are trained for careers in the skilled workforce. The donation of two Nissan vehicles for instructional purposes will be invaluable in giving our students hands-on training to help keep them abreast of the latest automotive technology.”

The Canton plant is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2013. Nissan has awarded nearly $1.2 million in company grants and contributions, in-kind gifts and student scholarships to the school district over the last decade. Additionally, Nissan employees volunteer many hours annually working with students in the classroom and as one-on-one mentors.

Dan Bednarzyk, vice president of manufacturing for Nissan’s Canton vehicle assembly plant, said, “At Nissan, we believe it’s vital that every child is offered a quality education to have the best opportunity for a lifetime of success. Helping Canton schools succeed is especially important because the district serves our local community and many of its students will go on to become future Nissan team members.”

The two donations were announced today at a celebratory event at Canton Elementary School. Participants included teachers, administrators, students, parents and community leaders, along with local Nissan managers and employees who volunteer in the schools.

Senator Kenny Wayne Jones of Canton said, “I have always been a strong advocate for education because it is essential to achieve the equality and opportunity that every child so richly deserves. I am pleased to see Nissan, the schools and the community standing together to help ensure a quality education for every one of Canton’s children.”

The Nissan Canton vehicle assembly plant began operations in 2003 and employs more than 5,000 people with an annual payroll in excess of $200 million. Nissan has announced plans to move assembly of the next-generation Nissan Murano to Canton from Japan beginning in 2014. Canton employees currently build the award-winning Altima, Armada full-size SUV, Xterra mid-size SUV, Titan and Frontier pickup trucks, and NV full-size commercial cargo and passenger vans. Canton will also begin building the all-new Sentra compact sedan in 2013.

About Canton Public Schools and Canton Career Center
The mission of the Canton Public School District, with full participation of parents and the total community, is to enable all students to become analytical thinkers, self-directed lifelong learners and effective communicators who are prepared to continue their education and /or to enter the global workplace and to participate in society as responsible citizens. From our relentless efforts, our graduation rate has increased by more than 35 percent and our dropout rate has decreased by more than 40 percent.

The Canton Career Center offers courses in Health Science, Automotive Service Technology, Engineering and Robotics, Marketing and Economics, Collision Repair, Construction Technology and Career Pathways Experience. For more information about Canton Public School District, visit www.cantonschools.net.
